When first starting your blog the idea of creating articles online might seem very exciting! Especially if you’re creating a blog as your future full-time business.

But when it’s time to write you get stuck…. What is the best first topic to write about? Do I need to be a writer to blog? How do I even structure my blog post?

Don’t worry, this is normal and what most bloggers face in the beginning.

The truth is, you do not have to be good at writing to create a blog.

As you create your blog and write your blog posts, you’ll figure out your voice and who you’re writing to. The main thing is to just begin. There’s no wrong way, just start and learn as you go.

Basic Blog Post Outline

  • Headline – Catchy headline to draw your readers in.
  • Introduction -Warm introduction connecting to your audience and letting them know what your blog post will help them with.
  • Body – In-depth information specific to your audience, teaching or providing quality content to keep your readers engaged.
  • Conclusion – Wrap up your blog post in a clear concise manner, summing up what the reader has just learned.
  • Take Action – Leave the reader inspired by your blog post and motivate them to take the next step and put use the information they’ve just learned.

The first step is choosing your blog post topic

You want all of your blog posts to be relevant to your blog niche. That’s why choosing a specific niche is important from the start. You want your readers to already know what your blog posts will do for them whenever they visit your site.

For example, all of my posts are about starting a blog from the beginning, so my readers know the common theme when scrolling through my posts.

Alright so you know your blog niche, but how do you choose your blog post topics?

Think about what you’re providing for your audience, and start from the beginning. If your blog is teaching your readers about how to do something, think of it as a course. You need to start from the bottom and teach your readers in order to gain the skill they’re looking for.

Another way to think of blog topics is to do an online search. Check out Google or Pinterest and see what articles pop up under your blog niche.

A big part of blogging is doing your research. Check out other bloggers within your niche and get an idea of how they’re running their blogs.

Of course, you don’t want to copy another blog or compare your new blog to their already established blog. But seeing how other blogs within your niche are set up might make it easier for you to decide how you want to run yours and which topics are trending currently.

Don't underestimate your headline

Think about it, any article you find online you probably found on a google page or scrolling on Pinterest where all you see are the headlines. So make it stand out!

You want to grab your reader’s attention with just a few words while summarizing what the blog post is about.

You want your title to catch their eyes over other posts they’re scrolling through.

You can do this by including a sense of urgency with headlines like ‘Why You Need To Today!’

Or include numbers to catch the eye such as ’10 reasons to ‘ or ‘5 Things Your Missing For ‘.

Again, do a little research, scroll online and see what stands out to you and then implement similar strategies.

Quality content is a must.

At the end of the day, the only thing that is going to make your blog business successful is having quality content.

You always want to strive to provide the best information or guidance through your blog posts.

Always come back to ‘Who is your target audience?’ and ‘What problem can you solve for them?’

There will always be plenty of information out on the internet, but can you provide a better version or better-outlined information.

In the beginning, it might take a few days to fully create your blog posts. And that’s okay! The more you write these posts, the easier it’ll get, and therefore the quicker it’ll get as well.

The biggest mistake you could make is to rush a post out just to have content to throw on Pinterest for more traffic.

Quality will beat out quantity every time.

Have a clear focus

Unless you have a personal blog and you’re just writing for the fun of it, you’ll need to have a clear focus behind each blog post in order to gain readers and eventually grow your blog into your business.

I’m willing to bet you’re like me and want a money-making blogging business.

So treat each blog post as another building block on your business. Put your time and effort into each part of your website and it’ll slowly pay off.

You want each post to be structured in a way that’s easy to read and leads the reader to the solution they’re looking for.

In order to keep things organized I highly recommend making a draft outline before writing your post.

This can be scribbled on a pad of paper or a typed-up layout. Whatever works for you to jot down your major points and topics you want to touch on in your post.

Proofread, edit & make it visually appealing

Go through creating your blog post initially by just letting your words pour out.

Once you have all your thoughts out then you can go back and edit. Proofread and make sure you have no typos and everything flows nicely.

After you have all your text, make sure the formatting works. Add titles to paragraphs, separate lines of text to better space things out.

Most blogs are read on mobile devices so make things skimmable!

Someone might be interested in your post but they don’t have time to read a 4 page paper. They just want to skim to the piece of information they’re looking for.

Bold or Italicize words or lines to help things stand out.

If your blog deals with fashion, travel, or a visual topic then add in photos to keep the reader engaged. (Some blog niches might do better with less photos as well, use your judgement)

Blog Post Tips

  • Plan out your posts – Instead of sitting down ready to write and having no idea what to write about. Plan your content out. Do your research or brainstorming and note down post topics you want to write about. Then stick them on a calendar so you know in what order you want to write them in. This will also keep you motivated. And to be honest, no one is going to hold you accountable for growing your blog other than you. So having visual deadlines can help you progress faster.
  • Eliminate distractions – On days when you plan to write these posts, plan your day around it. Eliminate any tasks you don’t necessarily have to do that day and focus solely on creating content. Make a cup of tea, light a candle, turn on some mellow music, and just get in the zone! Let your creativity flow.
  • Use an audio to text tool – For me, it’s easier to write/type out my thoughts. But if you find that you’re able to express yourself better talking things out instead of being confined to typing, an audio to text tool might work wonders for you! Plan out your layout and topics you want to cover and then just speak out loud as if you were talking to a friend and let it translate itself to text for you to edit later.
  • Don’t overcomplicate it – If the idea of writing a blog post for others to read is intimidating or writing just doesn’t come easy to you, pretend you’re talking to a friend. After all, no one is coming to your blog to read textbook definitions. Your unique voice through your writing is what will gain you an audience. So write as you would speak. If it helps, think of each post as more of a lesson. Walk your readers through your blog post,  don’t worry about a strict format.
