It can seem overwhelming to start your own website or blog, luckily one of the easiest starting steps is how to create a favicon for your site.

We’re going to dive into what a favicon is because if you haven’t created a website before, this is probably going to be a new term for you.

And we’re going to walk step by step through the quick process of getting your favicon out there publicly for your site.

What Is A "Favicon"?

A favicon is simply the small icon that displays next to your website tab.

You can see in the above image how next to my website, Twenty Three & Ivy, I have an icon of the letter T, which is my favicon.

Every website you visit will have its own unique favicon, you can see how Google and Canva have their own unique icons.

Do You Need A Favicon?

While WordPress won’t require you to have a unique favicon, it’ll highly benefit your blog if you do.

When starting your own blog from scratch you want to make it as professional-looking as possible. Creating a favicon will add to the overall branding of your blog.

If you don’t upload your own favicon, WordPress will show its default logo as your favicon.

This makes your blog just seem like a generic new blog and not like the blogging business we want to create!

How To Create A Favicon

Luckily creating a favicon is super easy and can take as little as 5 minutes to create and upload. Seriously, it’s that simple, so let’s jump into it.

The first step is to design your favicon.

I use Canva for all my image designs. Canva is free to sign up and use, you only need to pay for their Pro plan if you want access to all their features. The free plan is good enough for most blogging needs.

WordPress will crop your design into a square when you go to upload, so you have two options when creating your favicon.

You can use the Logo template in Canva to come up with a design or use the Custom Size option when you click on the Create Design button.

If you use the Custom Size option, use 96 x 96 px for best results.

Now it’s time to create! Play around and create your favicon.

Within Canva you can use the tabs on the left hand side to add design elements or text patterns to your design.

Once done, click on Share> Download to save.

How To Upload Your Design To Your Website

Now that you have your design, you’ll need to upload the image into WordPress.

To do so, go to your WordPress dashboard then click on Appearance > Customize

WordPress

Once on the Customize page, all your options to edit will be on the left-hand side.

Different options may show up depending on your theme.

Generally, you should be able to go to Header Builder > Logo.

Within the Logo tab scroll to the bottom and you’ll see the area for Site Icon. Here is where you can click on Upload/Change Image and upload your favicon design.

Once that’s uploaded click on Publish and you’re all set!

Tips & Tricks

Creating and uploading a favicon is that simple, here are a few things to keep in mind;

  • Your favicon does not need to be the same as your logo
  • You have a small area for your favicon so don’t try to squeeze too much in or you won’t be able to tell what it is
  • Create a few different designs and see what works best
  • Try to keep your favicon within your blog’s color scheme or style to further your brand.
