Before I started my blog, I was desperate to find a way to quit my corporate job.
I was unhappy working 50-60 hour weeks and was determined to find an alternative. But I knew I couldn’t just quit to find another soul crushing 9-5 job.
So like everything else, I googled it! ‘How to make money online’.
I researched online jobs that would allow me to work fully from home. I stumbled through the usual online surveys, virtual assistant, transcriptionist etc. when I came across an article about how bloggers were actually making great money!
Never knew that was a thing, but the more I researched this blogging idea the more I realized that if just one other person could do it, so could I.
If you’ve been curious about starting a blog then read on, this is for you.
1. Create Something That Is Completely Yours
I have found that the best part of creating a blog is being able to create something out of nowhere.
You buy your domain name and hosting site and it’s all yours to create and design. Everything from the content to the images and text designs are up to you.
This is not some mundane task you’d have at a job where you must follow a template. Every decision is yours which is extremely exciting.
You don’t need to know anything to begin, you will learn along the way.
So be creative! Enjoy the process, half the fun of blogging is seeing all your ideas come to life on the page in front of you.
2. Make Money
Of course this has to be high up on the list. Unless you’re just blogging for a hobby, you’re going to want to monetize your blog and see that income flow in.
Wanting to make money is not a good motivator for starting a blog in and of itself. This is not an instant solution.
But if you put the work in and follow the different steps you can take to monetize your blog, then you will definitely be able to create an income from blogging.
Luckily a lot of the times this income can completely surpass what you’re limited to make at a 9-5 job.
3. Work From Home
Being able to blog from the comfort of your own computer allows you to work from any location. Such as your cozy bed at home instead of heading into an office that always seems to be too cold with those horrible fluorescent lights.
If you’re an introvert like me, working from home is an absolute necessity.
Blogging will require you to put in some hard work, especially upfront, but being able to have a flexible schedule at home allows you to work around your life. Not live around your work schedule and PTO days.
4. Be Your Own Boss
Imagine never having to ask someone again to have a day off or leave early.
Being your own boss might just be the best feeling in the world. Yes you have the sole responsibility to keep yourself motivated to put in the work, but when and where you do that are up to you!
Stop giving your all to a job that would replace you in a minute.
Use your talents and motivation to better yourself and reach your own career goals!
5. Create A Job Around The Things You Love
You get to create your blog around any topic or niche that you love! This is one of the few jobs that will not feel like work because you’ll be doing something you enjoy.
At first you’ll need to figure out the technical side of blogging in order to get your website up and running.
The first few weeks will make you feel like a grandma with no internet skills trying to figure out how things work. I promise that feeling passes quickly. Then you’ll be left with the best feeling of accomplishment when you’ve learned how to apply all these new skills.
Waking up knowing that your job is updating and running your blog is a magical feeling.
Surround yourself with what you enjoy.
No more company deadlines, rush emails or stress that comes with working for someone else. If your blog is about cats, then guess what, you can get paid to teach people about cat things. Same with food blogs, if you love to create and try new recipes then that’s how you can spend your work time.
It is possible to make money from things that make you happy.
6. Grow Your Business
Not everyone is looking to flee a corporate job. You might already have your own business but are looking for ways to promote your products and gain new customers.
Blogs can provide your customers with a platform to learn more about your company and provide more traction.
Alternatively, you could be starting from scratch right now hoping to turn your blog into your business instead of just a blog.
If you have a skill set that you could provide a service with, blogging can help you turn that into your profession.
For example you could have a blog all about photography, and then offer your skills as a photographer. Allowing your readers to actually book you for events. Then you’d have your blog income plus an outside income as well for your physical work.
There’s many ways to snowball off of your blog once you gain traffic.
7. Sense Of Freedom
When you get to control the who, what, where, when and why of your job, that opens up an all new level of freedom. You get to control who your target audience is and can end up meeting great people along the way.
If you have a family to look after and know you can’t work a typical 9-5 schedule, you can wake up and put in an hour of work and sign off. Then come back later on and put in a few more hours.
Nothing is restricting you from your day to day routine.
You can make blogging work around your life.
Maybe you love to travel and refuse to accept the idea of putting your dreams on hold to work a typical job. If you have wifi, you can blog.
So pack your bags (and your laptop) and go explore! You can blog about your travels and provide destination guides for others.
Life is meant to be lived, not being confined to a cubical.
8. Help Others
Have fun creating blog posts knowing that someone out in the world is going to see and read what you’re writing.
Whether your blog is a teaching course or a review of your favorite beauty products, someone is going to enjoy and appreciate you taking the time to create that. The internet would be empty if people did not go online and create all that there is to offer.
Along my blogging journey I decided to create Twenty Three & Ivy to help others starting from where I was, the bottom.
It’s easy to say you want to start a blog, but another thing to figure out how to do so.
Luckily I had others who blogged before me to give me guidance and lessons. So in return I’d like to provide all of the knowledge I’ve learned in lessons that can be taught to the next hopeful bloggers.
9. Nothing Is Stopping You
If you’re interested in seeing if you could be a successful blogger, I say go for it!
There is nothing stopping you, no one holding you back from creating the next blog that makes $10K+ a month.
The only thing holding you back is yourself.
Once you realize you have all the control, the motivation will follow to help you reach your goals.
Don’t stress over your current job that you hate. Instead, realize that you can make a change by creating a new path right now. Every step that you take, every blog post you write, will bring you closer to your goal.
And if you’re a visual person like me then just wait until you see your website come alive with your blog posts. Seeing what you’re creating only provides even more encouragement to continue.
10. It's Fun!
Lastly, have fun.
Enjoy researching the steps of creating your blog. Take pride in your work and give yourself credit for trying something new.
It’s not too often that you get to teach yourself something from scratch.
Give yourself the freedom to try and see what you can create.
